Every year, thousands of used taxi buyers in India fall victim to document fraud — buying vehicles with fake RCs, cleared loans that weren't, or invalid permits. The good news: thorough document verification takes less than an hour and can save you from years of legal and financial headaches.
1. Verify the RC Book (Registration Certificate)
The RC book is the most important document. Verify it online at the Parivahan portal (parivahan.gov.in) using the vehicle registration number.
- Owner name must match the seller's ID
- Vehicle class must show "Commercial" or "Transport" — not private
- Engine number and chassis number must match the physical vehicle
- Check registration validity (some need periodic renewal)
- Verify the RTO — the seller's address and RTO jurisdiction should match
2. Check for Hypothecation (Loan Status)
Hypothecation means the vehicle is pledged against a loan. If it shows "HDFC Bank" or any lender on the RC, the loan must be cleared before the vehicle is sold. Ask for the NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the bank and verify it.
You can verify hypothecation status on the Parivahan portal: Vehicle → Services → Know your vehicle details → enter the registration number.
3. Verify the Commercial Permit
Commercial vehicles need a valid permit to operate legally. Verify:
- Permit type: All India Tourist Permit, State Permit, or City Permit
- Permit validity date — expired permits mean the buyer must renew (extra cost and time)
- Permit zone — ensure it covers your operating area
- Cross-check permit number on the Parivahan portal
4. Fitness Certificate Check
A Fitness Certificate (FC) is mandatory for all commercial vehicles and needs periodic renewal. It certifies that the vehicle meets road safety and emission standards.
- FC must be valid at the time of purchase
- For new vehicles: FC is valid for 2 years, then annually
- An expired FC means the vehicle cannot legally operate until renewed
- Verify FC validity on the Parivahan portal
5. Insurance Verification
Commercial vehicle insurance is different and more expensive than personal vehicle insurance. Verify:
- Insurance must be Commercial/Goods Carrying/Passenger Carrying vehicle type
- Personal vehicle insurance is invalid for commercial use
- Check validity dates and ensure no lapse period
- Verify on IIB (Insurance Information Bureau) portal at iib.gov.in
6. VAHAN Portal Full Check
The VAHAN portal (vahan.parivahan.gov.in) is your one-stop source for verifying all vehicle details officially. Enter the registration number to see: owner details, chassis/engine numbers, registration validity, permit status, fitness status, tax payment status, and more.
7. Physical Chassis and Engine Number Verification
Always physically verify the chassis number (embossed on the vehicle floor near the driver seat) and engine number against the RC book. Mismatches indicate a stolen or fraudulent vehicle — walk away immediately.
